Shepard Alonzo Mount a réalisé ce portrait de sa femme Elizabeth Hempstead Elliott Mount après leur mariage. Il était déjà un artiste bien connu qui a commencé comme apprenti d'un constructeur de voitures. Il a ensuite étudié la peinture et a finalement ouvert son propre atelier de portrait à New York avec son frère, William Sidney Mount. Après avoir épousé Elizabeth, il a continué à peindre des paysages, des natures mortes et des portraits.
