I due pannelli di questo brillante schermo a foglia d'oro mostrano scene contrastanti di due egrets a riposo e tre corvi in volo, con forme bianche e nere controbilancianti l'un l'altro a effetto mesmerizing. Il colore bianco degli egreti è stato realizzato tagliando lo strato foglia d'oro e esponendo la carta, una tecnica che l'artista ha usato su altri esempi di pittura aviaria. Shibata Zeshin era prevalentemente conosciuto come maestro artigiano laccato, e incorporava anche la tecnica nei suoi dipinti. Qui, la lacca impiegata al posto dell'inchiostro aggiunge una ricca e nera lucentezza alla superficie. Questa composizione tour-de-force, originariamente montata su due pannelli separati in legno incorniciato, fonde pittoricamente elementi della scuola Maruyama-Shijō, in cui Zeshin prima istruito, con caratteristiche dell'arte Rinpa.
