Aoki Shigeru, nata nella Prefettura di Fukuoka nel 1882, è un artista che rappresenta il romantico Giappone moderno. Dipinse numerose opere con temi come la mitologia giapponese e le antiche storie indiane, incantando la gente del tempo con la sua ricca espressività e creatività. Dopo aver vagato per Kyushu a causa della povertà e del conflitto familiare per circa tre anni alla fine della sua vita, Aoki è morto alla giovane età di 28 anni dalla malattia polmonare. "Dog" è un lavoro fatto durante il suo tempo vagando intorno a Kyushu. In “Dog,” la figura di un cane, in posa come un attore, è raffigurata in una scena retroilluminata al tramonto, un ambiente drammatico abbastanza tipico di Aoki. Si può percepire l'alto livello della capacità descrittiva di Aoki dal disegno di tali aspetti come i muscoli allungati della spalla e le gambe posteriori dall'aspetto agile.
