Monk Shunsō, alumno de Reigen y Suiō, siguió en la tradición de estos y otros en el linaje de Hakuin Ekaku creando imágenes dinámicamente cepilladas de figuras zen famosas. Aquí ha representado el emimento de los monjes de la fiebre temprana Daitō Kokushi (Shūhō Myōchō, 1283–1337) bajo el pretexto de un mendigo en un manto de paja y un sombrero de sedge tattered. El monje vivió como recluso durante muchos años en Kyoto, tomando refugio bajo el puente de Gojō. Daitō Kokushi estableció finalmente su legado al fundar Daitokuji en Kyoto, el gran complejo monástico del budismo zen Rinzai. Hakuin consideró que Daitō Kokushi era el jefe del linaje y así pintó muchas imágenes de él; Shunsō siguió en esta tradición.
