Il Santo personalizza il dolore e la penitenza, suggerendo la meditazione lontano dal mondo. Sulla mano destra tiene un teschio, simbolo dei valori laici; tiene delicatamente il suo lungo volto sulla mano sinistra, guardando verso l'osservatore. Al suo fianco si erge il vaso di profumi che potrebbero essere utilizzati per ungere i piedi di Cristo.
