Influenciado por la obra de Caravaggio, Simon Vouet (1590-1649) se trasladó a Italia en 1612, donde también desarrolló un interés por la obra de los hermanos Carracci y los coloristas venecianos y flamencos. Invocado a París por Louis XIII en 1624, recibió el título de Premier Peintre du Roi. Muchos de los principales artistas del siglo XVII (Le Brun, Lesueur, Perrier, Mignard, etc.) pasaron por su taller y trabajaron con él en comisiones para importantes proyectos decorativos en la capital francesa. En 1636, Vouet pintó un esquema decorativo en la capilla del Hôtel Séguier para el canciller Pierre Séguier. Este conjunto, compuesto por un techo pintado y una serie de pinturas sobre lienzo y madera, se vendió durante la Revolución Francesa y se rompió a principios del siglo XIX.
