Ce panneau provient d'un important retable portable en cinq parties qui a peut-être été commandé par le corps dirigeant de la ville de Sienne. Avec Giotto, Simone fut l'artiste le plus célèbre de son temps. Sa technique raffinée et ses pouvoirs descriptifs, évidents dans l'expression de saint André et dans la manière dont il tient son livre, ont été inégalés en Europe et ont gagné l'éloge et l'amitié du poète Petrarch (1304-1374). Le cadre rectangulaire est original.
