En este retrato real, pintado por Anthony van Dyck, King Charles Llevo armadura ceremonial y una cadena de oro con un medallón llevando una imagen de San Jorge y el dragón. The medallion, known as “lesser George”, was reportedly a valuable possession of the King, and identified him as head of the Order of the Garter, leader of chivalrous knights. Carlos no sólo lleva el medallón de la soberanía caballerosa, sino que muestra la corona y el cetro de la soberanía real. El rey es representado en su armadura, sosteniendo el bastón del comandante al lado de la empuñadura de su espada y colocando su mano en el orbe; este lenguaje visual desbordado recuerda al espectador de los muchos papeles de Carlos: santo, comandante, rey, caballero, guerrero, y simultáneamente legitima su reclamo a la soberanía.
