Il produttore e pittore Sir Frank Short (1857-1945) originariamente addestrato come ingegnere, ma ha lasciato questa linea di lavoro per perseguire una carriera come artista. Frequentò lezioni serali alla Stourbridge School of Art prima di trasferirsi a Londra. A Londra ha studiato a South Kensington e Westminster School of Art, padroneggiando le tecniche di mezzotinta, acquatinta e incisione. Breve esposto alla Royal Academy tra il 1885 e il 1904. Ha vinto due medaglie d'oro per l'incisione al Salone di Parigi nel 1889 e 1900. Poco dopo divenne insegnante di incisione e fu professore di incisione al Royal College of Art tra il 1913 e il 1924. Fu eletto membro della Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers (ora Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers) nel 1885, diventando il suo presidente tra il 1910 e il 1938.
