È l'ultimo e in qualche modo il più astratto dei suoi molti tentativi di evocare una storia, o di coniugare l'umore, attraverso la raffigurazione di una figura femminile solitaria.Flaming June fu dipinto dalla vita, anche se l'identità del modello che sedeva a Leighton per l'immagine rimase un mistero fino a poco tempo fa come gli anni '30.Flaming June è un esempio quintessentiale del genere: il sogno di una donna sognante, ambientato in un Mediterraneo caldo-sbattuto che è di per sé il sogno di un passato che non è mai stato.
