Ende März und Anfang April 1801 reiste der siebzehnjährige Sohn von Edward Satchwell Fraser und Jane Fraser von Reelig nach Edinburgh von seinem Familienhaus in Inverness-shire en route nach London. Es war der erste von William Frasers zahlreichen Besuchen im Studio von Sir Henry Raeburn, wo dieses schaurige Porträt gemalt wurde. Das fertige Porträt wurde in den Familien-Essraum in Nordschottland versandt, während sein Sitter als Kolonialbediensteter der East India Company nach Delhi verlegt wurde. William fiel unter den Mughal-Satz und Vater zahlreiche Kinder aus seinem Harem von fünf oder sechs muslimischen und hinduistischen Frauen. Er kehrte nie nach Schottland zurück, denn er wurde 1835 ermordet, während der Kommissar von Delhi.
