Il passaggio nord-ovest era l'innegabile via del mare intorno al Nord America che si pensava di fornire un passaggio all'Oriente. Nel tempo, è diventato sinonimo di fallimento, avversità e morte, con uomini e navi che lottano contro le dispari senza speranza in un deserto congelato. Millais dipinse questa foto nel 1874 quando un'altra spedizione inglese stava per partire.
