3 marzo 1855 Regina Vittoria e Principe Alberto, accompagnati dal Principe di Galles e dal Principe Alfred, visitarono l'ospedale militare a Fort Pitt, Chatham. Hanno incontrato alcuni dei 450 soldati che erano tornati lì dal Crimea. La Regina scrisse poi a Lord Panmure, Segretario per la Guerra, criticando gli edifici con le loro finestre alte, i piccoli reparti, e la mancanza di una sala da pranzo, in modo che gli uomini poveri devono avere le loro cene nella stessa stanza in cui dormono, e in cui alcuni possono morire.
