Reynolds Porträt bestätigte sofort den Status von Frau Siddons als größter tragischer Schauspielerin ihres Tages. Er präsentiert sie nicht nur in einer theatralischen Rolle, sondern als Verkörperung von Melpomene, der Maus der Tragödie. Hinter ihr stehen Persönlichkeiten, die Terror (rechts) und Mitleid repräsentieren. Ihre Pose erinnert an die Figur des Propheten Jesaja von Michelangelos Sistine Ceiling, aber Frau Siddons bestand darauf, dass sie es spontan selbst komponiert hatte. Dies ist eine von drei Versionen Reynolds aus dem Porträt.
