Meglio ricordato come il comandante britannico che nel 1777 si arrese alle forze americane a Saratoga, John Burgoyne (1722–92) è stato anche conosciuto nel suo giorno come un dandy, giocatore d'azzardo, attore, playwright amatoriale e membro del Parlamento. Questo ritratto potrebbe essere stato commissionato dal suo alto funzionario, il conte La Lippe, come ricordo della loro campagna portoghese del 1762. È presumibilmente il ritratto che deriva da una seduta del generale Burgoyne annota nel libro di Reynolds per maggio del 1766; l'uniforme di Burgoyne è quella dei sedici dragoni leggeri come è stato indossato fino a quel mese. La composizione, con la figura abbagliante sagomata prima di un orizzonte basso e di un cielo nuvoloso, doveva diventare un classico tipo di ritrattismo romantico.
