Nel 1781, dopo un viaggio di sei settimane in Olanda e nelle Fiandre, dove evidentemente andò a studiare il lavoro di Rubens, Reynolds tornò alla sua pratica di ritratto a Londra con un nuovo apprezzamento del naturalismo. L'effetto del suo studio di Rubens può essere visto in questo ritratto di Lady Frances Finch, in cui l'artista pone la sua sitter, rilassato e confortevole, in un ambiente boscoso con nessuna delle allusioni classiche che erano il suo marchio. Lady Frances (1761–1838), figlia del III conte di Aylesford (1715–1777), fu ventuno al momento della realizzazione del ritratto. La seduta finale è registrata nel marzo 1782 e nel settembre dello stesso anno Lady Frances aveva sposato George Legge, Lord Lewisham, e quindi era diventata Lady Lewisham, contessa di Dartmouth.
