A metà degli anni 1860, Alma-Tadema dipinse un certo numero di soggetti ambientati nell'antico Egitto, in cui la convincente precisione archeologica e l'inquietudine della vita sembrano rendere vivo il lontano passato. Questo metodo parallelava quello dei pittori orientalisti come Jean-Léon Gérôme, che si specializzavano sia nelle raffigurazioni della vita contemporanea in Medio Oriente che in soggetti storici. Più tardi nella sua carriera, Alma-Tadema sarebbe specializzato in scene dell'antica Roma.
