By 1912, Alco-GE’s short-bodied S-class electric locomotives powered the daily commute in most major cities in the United States including New York. The ubiquitous use of the S-class inspired a variety of international toy interpretations, including this tin-plate example by Lionel. Based in New-York City, the prolific toy train firm often drew inspiration from New York’s rail infrastructure. Painted in a fanciful dark green livery, this toy locomotive features the logo of the New York Central Railroad.
