Julia Floyd (1795–1859) wurde 1820 mit dem britischen Staatsmann Sir Robert Peel verheiratet, der zweimal als Premierminister fungierte und ein begeisterter Schirmherr von Lawrence war. Das Frick-Porträt wurde offenbar von Rubens’ Gemälde von Susanna Fourment, bekannt als Chapeau de paille, inspiriert, die Peel 1823 erworben hatte. Als Lawrence’s Lady Peel 1827 erstmals an der Royal Academy ausgestellt wurde, behauptete ein Kritiker, es sei unter „die höchsten Errungenschaften der modernen Kunst“.
