Julia Floyd (1795–1859) fue casada en 1820 con el estadista británico Sir Robert Peel, quien dos veces sirvió como Primer Ministro y era un ávido patrón de Lawrence. El retrato de Frick aparentemente fue inspirado por la pintura de Rubens de Susanna Fourment conocido como el Chapeau de paille, que Peel había adquirido en 1823. Cuando la Dama de Lawrence Peel fue exhibida por primera vez en la Real Academia en 1827, un crítico afirmó que estaba entre “los logros más altos del arte moderno”.
