Soga Shōhaku è tra il gruppo selezionato di pittori scritti nella storia dell'arte giapponese come i cosiddetti "pittori eccentrici" a metà del XX secolo per il suo stile di pittura non ortodossa. Questo raro schermo policromatico è stato dipinto all'altezza dei suoi poteri di grottescherie pittoriche. Ritrae un famoso episodio dell'epica guerra del XIV secolo, il Tale of the Heike, in cui i guerrieri Kagesue (a sinistra, in rosso) e Takatsuna (a destra, in verde) competono per l'onore di essere il primo a attraversare il fiume Uji dopo aver ritirato le truppe nemiche hanno distrutto il ponte. Mentre si avvicinano all'acqua scintillante, Takatsuna inganna Kagesue nel pensare che la sua sella è sciolta. Quando Kagesue si appoggia a controllare, Takatsuna si precipita oltre di lui per rivendicare la vittoria. Shōhaku dipinge Takatsuna con una faccia pallida, maschera-come; il suo aria sinistro è ingrandita dalle zanne del suo cavallo, Ikezumi (“Mortal Eater”).
