Questo dipinto si basa su una poesia di Lord Tennyson. Racconta la storia di Elaine, una ragazza di campagna innocente che si innamora di Sir Lancelot. La abbandona a favore della Regina Guinevere e lei muore dall'amore incontaminato. L’immagine di Anderson raffigura un servo che canta il corpo di Elaine al palazzo di Re Artù a Camelot. Anderson nacque a Parigi e vi studiò sotto l'artista russo Barone Charles de Steuben. La sua educazione artistica fu ridotta quando la sua famiglia si trasferì in America nel 1848. Da allora era autodidatta. Nel 1871 Liverpool ha tenuto la sua prima Mostra d'Autunno. .
