Esta pintura se basa en un poema de Lord Tennyson. Cuenta la historia de Elaine, una inocente chica de campo que se enamora de Sir Lancelot. La abandona a favor de la reina Guinevere y muere por amor no correspondido. La imagen de Anderson representa a un sirviente remar el cuerpo de Elaine al palacio del rey Arturo en Camelot. Anderson nació en París y estudió allí bajo el artista ruso Barón Charles de Steuben. Su educación artística fue cortada cuando su familia se mudó a América en 1848. A partir de entonces era autodidacta. En 1871 Liverpool celebró su primera exposición de otoño.
