Louis Comfort Tiffany (American, 1848-1933) è stato un artista e designer americano che è forse meglio conosciuto per le sue lampade di vetro e finestre. Ha lavorato in una varietà di media progettando mosaici, ceramiche, gioielli, metallo e vetro soffiato. Nel 1893 aprì una fabbrica di vetro a New York e stabilì un metodo unico per trattare il vetro fuso con ossidi metallici che assorbivano il vetro, creando un effetto superficiale iridescente. Nello stesso anno Tiffany coniò il termine favrile (che significava fatto a mano), che brevettò nel 1894 e applicò il termine a tutti i suoi lavori di vetro, smalto e ceramica per suggerire la loro qualità artigianale. Oggi, il termine favrile è più strettamente associato al vetro luminoso di arte iridescente progettato da Tiffany, come questo.
