Uno dei capolavori della collezione di pittura buddista del Met, questo scaffale è la prima versione dipinta conosciuta del venticinquesimo capitolo del Lotus Sutra, che è conosciuto come “Universal Gateway of the Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World’s Sounds”. Il testo del sutra è intervallato da trentaquattro immagini colorate che celebrano gli atti misericordiosi del bodhisattva Kannon (Sanscrito: Avalokiteshvara). Secondo l'iscrizione, questo lavoro è stato modellato dopo un libro stampato cinese del 1208, che a sua volta si basava su un primo handcroll dipinto. L'artista anonimo trasforma l'originale cinese attraverso l'inclusione di elementi indigene yamato-e (tradizionale stile di pittura giapponese) soprattutto nei paesaggi.
