Sōhei, né dans une famille marchande à Bungo-han (aujourd'hui Préfecture Oita), a commencé à étudier à l'âge de dix-neuf ans avec le peintre Nanga Tanomura Chikuden (1777–1835). Sōhei était connu pour son style de peinture très individuel. Au XIXe siècle, la culture littératie confucienne s'épanouit parmi toutes les classes du Japon; le ferment des idées et de l'expression qu'elle a favorisé a conduit au bouleversement politique au milieu du siècle qui a créé l'État Meiji.
