Tanaka terminò Saitama Prefectural Urawa High School nel 1904. Viaggiò da solo a Seattle, dove studiò pittura e divenne artista. I suoi dipinti nudi hanno attirato l'attenzione. Nel 1920 si trasferisce a Parigi con la moglie ed è stato attivo al Salon d’Automne e altre mostre che si tengono periodicamente. Morì a Parigi senza mai tornare in Giappone dopo aver lasciato la sua patria.
