Chassériau testimoniò questa scena e la schizzò nel suo taccuino durante un viaggio in Algeria nel 1846. Dall'antica città di Costantino scrisse: "Ho visto cose molto curiosi: primitive e schiaccianti, toccanti e singolari. A Costantino, che è alto in alcune enormi montagne, si vede il popolo arabo e il popolo ebraico [vivere] come erano all'inizio del tempo." Le donne ebraiche del Nord Africa erano soggetti particolarmente attraenti per i pittori europei perché non indossavano veli.
