Dieses Gemälde basiert auf einem Druck, einem Teil einer Reihe von Radierungen von Chassériau, die Shakespeares Othello illustriert, der 1844 in Paris veröffentlicht wurde. Es zeigt Akt 4, Szene 3 des Spiels, einen letzten Moment der Ruhe vor Desdemonas Mord durch ihren Mann Othello. Desdemonas Dienstmädchen, Emilia, der bei der Orchestrierung des Verbrechens mitgewirkt hat, schrumpft ab, indem er sich an das Wissen drängt, was vor sich geht. Die Lyre Desdemona hält nicht von Shakespeare beschrieben; Chassériau beobachtete es in einer 1836 Produktion, in der die Rolle von der gefeierten Sängerin Maria Malibran Garcia (1808–1836), genannt La Malibran, gespielt wurde.
