Le jésuite Athanasius Kircher s'est rendu en Méditerranée dans les années 1630 et a vécu un tremblement de terre et a vu Stromboli et Etna. Il a exploré le cratère de Vésuve et ses expériences nourries dans son grand livre de philosophie naturelle: Mundus Subterraneus a été publié en 1665.
