This bladed weapon was conceived by the Cavalry Captain Luis Carbajal Melgarejo, who was Duke of Avero, Marquis of Puerto Seguro and Gouveia, Count of Portalegre, Cabrillas, and Bailén, and Grandee of Spain. In the early 20th century, he combined the advantages of the sword and saber in a single weapon that had a single blade like a saber, rather than two like a sword, but it was straight like a sword, not curved like a saber. This model from 1907–18 was provisionally issued to the cavalry troops of the Civil Guard by Royal Order on August 6, 1907. It was then definitively declared regulation in 1918, both for troops, as well as noncommissioned officers and brigades in the cavalry.
