Theo van Doesburg iniziò la sua carriera come artista autodidatta. I suoi primi paesaggi e ritratti, dipinti prima del 1915, manifestano l'influenza dell'espressionismo tedesco, e soprattutto Wassily Kandinsky. Fin dalla sua gioventù, era impegnato in questioni teoriche relative alla pittura, e ha pianificato il lancio di una rivista d'arte già a metà del 1910. Pubblicò infine il periodico, De Stijl, nel novembre 1917 con i suoi amici simili, Piet Mondrian, Bart van der Leck e l'ungherese Vilmos Huszár, che continuarono ad esistere grazie a Doesburg
