Le MADELEINE, détenu par le Commodore John S. Dickerson du Brooklyn Yacht Club et conçu par Jacob Voorhis, avait une histoire illustrante. Elle a été construite en 1868 par David Kirby à Rye, New York en tant que sloop central. En 1870, MADELEINE fut partiellement reconstruit et converti en goélette, devenant ensuite membre de la flotte de New York Yacht Club en 1876. Cette année-là, elle a défendu la Coupe de l'Amérique contre le challenger canadien COUNTESS OF DUFFERIN. Swiftest dans la flotte de New York Yacht Club, MADELEINE a facilement remporté la Coupe.
