Cole, il fondatore della Hudson River School of landscape painting, ha disegnato questo studio per una serie (mai realizzato) di dipinti basati sulla poesia di William Cullen Bryant “The Fountain” (1839). Il poema evoca diverse epoche della civiltà americana attraverso incidenti che si verificano in un flusso di foresta. In questa scena, un coraggioso ferito (modellato dopo la scultura ellenistica conosciuta come "Dying Gaul", che Cole aveva visto a Roma) simboleggia la situazione di molti indiani americani in un'epoca di trasferimento forzato. Il versetto di Bryant legge in parte: "Ecco/Il guerriero indiano, che una mano non visto/Ha sminuzzato con la sua ferita mortale nei boschi,/Pensa lentamente al tuo rivolto ben noto,/E fischia il suo colpo di morte".
