Tornato a Filadelfia dall'Europa nel 1870, Eakins iniziò una serie di rappresentazioni dello sport dello sculling, un soggetto per il quale è identificato in modo unico. Questo è il primo lavoro importante in quella serie di dipinti e acquerelli. Si ritiene commemorare la vittoria di Max Schmitt (1843-1900), un avvocato e vogatore amatoriale, in una gara importante sul fiume Schuylkill nell'ottobre 1870. Anche un avido vogatore, Eakins si descrisse tirando i remi di una feccia nella distanza di mezzo.
