Volviendo a Filadelfia desde Europa en 1870, Eakins comenzó una serie de representaciones del deporte del esculismo, un tema para el cual es identificado únicamente. Esta es la primera obra importante de esa serie de pinturas y acuarelas. Se cree que conmemora la victoria de Max Schmitt (1843–1900), abogado y experto remo amateur, en una importante carrera en el río Schuylkill en octubre de 1870. También un ávido remo, Eakins se describía tirando los remos de un remo en la distancia media.
