Dopo aver completato gli studi a Parigi, Eakins viaggiò in Spagna nel 1869. A Madrid, visita il Museo del Prado, dove ammira i dipinti di Diego Velázquez e Jusepe de Ribera. Poi si stabilì per l'inverno a Siviglia, da dove scrisse a sua sorella che stava dipingendo Carmelita Requeña, la figlia di sette anni di artisti di strada. Questo ritratto, realizzato in preparazione di una grande composizione multi-figure, rivela le lezioni di Eakins a Parigi sotto Léon Bonnat, che ha sostenuto la tradizione pittorica dei maestri barocchi spagnoli.
