Después de completar sus estudios en París, Eakins viajó a España en 1869. En Madrid visitó el Museo del Prado, donde admiraba las pinturas de Diego Velázquez y Jusepe de Ribera. Luego se estableció para el invierno en Sevilla, desde donde escribió a su hermana que estaba pintando Carmelita Requeña, la hija de siete años de artistas callejeros. Este retrato, elaborado en preparación para una gran composición multifigurada, revela las lecciones de Eakins en París bajo Léon Bonnat, que defendió la tradición pintoresca de los maestros barrocos españoles.
