Il nuoto mostra l’interesse di Thomas Eakins nell’analisi scientifica dei corpi in movimento. La disposizione dei nuotatori suggerì il movimento sequenziale di una singola figura attraverso lo spazio pittorico. Come capo dell'Accademia della Pennsylvania delle Belle Arti, Eakins sentiva che la forma umana era centrale all'arte moderna e fece lo studio del nudo integrale al suo insegnamento. Poiché le figure di questo dipinto erano facilmente identificabili come l'artista e i suoi studenti (Eakins è al nuoto di estrema destra verso il suo cane, Henry), le reazioni al soggetto hanno oscurato le sue intenzioni artistiche. Le accuse di indecenza alla fine hanno costretto le dimissioni di Eakins dal suo prestigioso post all'accademia.
