In questo dipinto, il padre dell'artista guarda un gioco di scacchi tra due amici in un salotto rinascimentale di una casa di Philadelphia. Eakins ha onorato suo padre con un'iscrizione latina sul cassetto della tavola scacchistica, che si traduce come "il figlio di Benjamin Eakins ha dipinto questo nel '76." Una riproduzione di un dipinto del principale insegnante francese di Eakins, Jean-Léon Gérôme, pende sul mantello. Eakins aderì alle lezioni accademiche di Gérôme nella sua attenta costruzione spaziale e nel dettaglio meticoloso. Nel 1881 The Chess Players divenne il primo lavoro ad essere accettato dal Metropolitan Museum come dono di un artista vivente.
