Frances Duncombe nacque nel 1757, l'unica figlia di Anthony Duncombe e Frances Bathurst. Il ritratto di Gainsborough di lei rivela l'ammirazione dell'artista per Van Dyck, non solo nelle sue proporzioni eleganti, posa aggraziata, e l'ambientazione Arcadian, ma anche nel costume, che richiama le mode del XVII secolo. Fu probabilmente dipinto mentre il soggetto viveva con la famiglia del conte di Radnor, in cui la sua matrigna si sposò; il conte commissionò a Gainsborough una serie di ritratti in grande stile per completare la sua collezione di Old Masters. Nel 1778 Frances sposò John Bowater di Woolwich, che subì vari invertimenti e andò alla prigione dei debitori nonostante la notevole fortuna che lo portò.
