St. James's Park war in der Nähe von Gainsboroughs London Residenz, Schomberg House, in Pall Mall. Die lange baumgefütterte Straße namens Mall, die südlich des St. James’s Palace verläuft, war ein modischer Ort zum Spaziergang im achtzehnten Jahrhundert. Diese Komposition ist ungewöhnlich unter den späteren Werken des Künstlers und erinnert, wie mehrere zeitgenössische Kritiker bemerkten, an die Fêtes Galantes von Watteau. Das federige Blatt und das rhythmische Design führten einen Betrachter dazu, das Gemälde als „alle Aflter, wie eine Dame“ zu beschreiben.
