El parque de St. James estaba cerca de la residencia de Gainsborough en Londres, Schomberg House, en Pall Mall. La larga avenida arbolada llamada el Mall, que corre al sur del Palacio de Santiago, fue un lugar de moda para pasear en el siglo XVIII. Esta composición es inusual entre las obras posteriores del artista y recuerda, como han señalado varios críticos contemporáneos, los fêtes galantes de Watteau. El follaje plumado y el diseño rítmico llevó a un observador a describir la pintura como “todo afluyente, como una dama”
