Isabella Stanhope, figlia del conte di Harrington, sposò il visconte Molyneux di Croxteth Hall nel novembre 1768. Poco dopo la coppia andò a Bath, dove la Visconte si sedette per il grande pittore della società alla moda della città. Gainsborough era appena stato eletto alla nuova Royal Academy di Londra, e in questo ritratto cerca di impressionare un pubblico di Londra. La scala e il posizionamento della figura trasmettono la sua eleganza e anche un tocco di preciosità. Gainsborough ha sfiorato la sua abilità sulle trame del vestito e le mani finemente osservate e superbamente modellate. C’è, sotto il virtuosismo, un elemento di cura e di sollecitudine che distingue questo lavoro nella ritrattistica della società di Gainsborough.
