Thomas Sully, né en Angleterre, a peint cet autoportrait pour son hôte à Baltimore, Maryland, le courtier Henry Robinson. L'artiste est montré interrompu à son travail, avec l'outil principal de sa profession pointé sur sa tête fortement éclairée. Ce dispositif de pinceau est courant dans les autoportraits des artistes, et Sully est censé l'avoir adapté d'un travail similaire de Benjamin West, avec lequel il avait étudié à Londres. Bien que le brushwork de Sully est exceptionnellement retenu ici, sa rapidité peintre se mélange avec la spontanéité engageante de la pose pour créer un sentiment d'immédiateté.
