Il Philadelphian Thomas Sully dipinse questo autoritratto per il suo ospite a Baltimora, nel Maryland, il broker Henry Robinson. L'artista viene mostrato interrotto al suo lavoro, con lo strumento primario della sua professione puntato alla sua testa bruscamente illuminata. Questo dispositivo di spazzole è comune negli autoritratti degli artisti, e Sully è pensato di averlo adattato da un lavoro simile di Benjamin West, con il quale aveva studiato a Londra.
