Questo grande, allegorosamente ricco ritratto della figlia di Sully Jane Cooper Sully Darley (1807-1877) e suo figlio Francis Thomas Sully Darley (d.1914) ha provocato molte interpretazioni, la più ambiziosa delle quali equipara madre e figlio con la figura mitologica di Penelope, la moglie ideale di Odysseus, e Telemachus, suo figlio perfetto. Sully riempito la composizione con attributi di blithe vita familiare: lo spray di evy aggrappato al muro è l'emblema di una moglie fedele; la scena sull'urna--Hermes che porta il bambino Dionysus ad essere nutrito dalle ninfe -lunghi ai doveri della maternità; il piede del ragazzo riposa leggermente sul suo cane connota fedeltà e fedeltà.
