Grand portrait du président George Washington (1732-1799), commandant en chef de l'Armée continentale pendant la Révolution américaine et premier président des États-Unis. Le général Washington n'est pas représenté à une occasion précise, mais la peinture évoque plutôt l'icône nationale qui avait pris forme pendant les années 1790, lorsque le président Washington était en fonction et Philadelphie était la capitale. La représentation rappelle les peintures de Gilbert Stuart qui sont devenues la base de l'iconographie trouvée sur le billet d'un dollar.
