Originaria del Kentucky nel 1799, le riunioni del campo erano incontri sociali e religiosi all'aperto popolari tra i cristiani evangelici nelle aree rurali. Quando dipinto da Whittredge nel 1874, tali servizi erano sempre più rari. Anche se riempito di figure — tra cui un predicatore che consegna un sermone da una fase costruita — l'attenzione principale dell'artista è sul paesaggio. Molto probabilmente raffigurante una scena nelle Catskill Mountains, Whittredge ha reso accuratamente le riflessioni di superficie del laghetto di primo piano, mentre abilmente contrastando un paesaggio sole-soaked a destra con aree di ombra a sinistra.
