Nato in Ohio, Whittredge ha iniziato la sua carriera come pittore di segno e ritratto a Cincinnati, dove ha attirato l'attenzione dei patroni locali il cui sostegno gli ha permesso di viaggiare all'estero. Dopo un decennio di studio in Europa, tornò negli Stati Uniti nel 1859, ambientato a New York City per perseguire la pittura del paesaggio. Come una vista nella valle dell'Hudson, questo lavoro rivela l'influenza dell'artista Asher B. Durand, i cui interni forestali (15.30.59 e 95.13.1) ispirarono la composizione verticale di Whittredge. Tuttavia, a differenza di Durand, Whittredge ha adottato effetti di illuminazione drammatici, giustapponendo alberi di primo piano ombreggianti con un terreno centrale illuminato brillantemente per sottolineare le qualità espressive della natura.
